Week 3 2013: Gameday review

Good evening folks.  Sorry for the delay on this week’s official Unofficial College Gameday review.  We got a last minute invite to go do some gigging with the A&M crowd during today’s big game between Bama and Texas A&M, so we decided to join in the festivities.  Speaking of which, today’s episode of College Gameday was coming at you live from College Station, Tx for this matchup between the Crimson Tide and those Aggies.  This crowd was more lively than last week, and perhaps the most organized fanbase in Gameday history.  Whether you love or hate Texas A&M, they have a group of fans that know yells and chants down to the most minute details, and it made for a good show today.  While we are on the subject of the fans today, let us take a moment to rejoice in a few of the signs spotted today.  “Even Forrest Gump got into Bama” was a strong contender, but this week’s official sign of the week is pictured below.  I salute you sir; this is good work you are doing.

The guys talked a little football, and then this happened, and I don’t really have much to say about it.

Bald Man on Campus returned with your host Scott Van Pelt, and this week it was an interview with Alabama linebacker CJ Mosley.  There wasn’t really much schtick from SVP this week; it was pretty much a regular interview.  This segment determined that CJ Mosley is pretty good at football.

Quarterback guru George Whitfield returned to talk about Johnny Manziel leading up to today’s game.  If I can take a minute to editorialize here, I’d like to say that this segment either needs more substance or needs to go.  Week 1 was really cool when we saw his training methods, but his interview was incredibly generic.  Week 2 he came on for analysis and it was incredibly generic.  Week 3 came and went, and it was once again incredibly generic.  The high point of this segment was Whitfield telling us Manziel is emotionally at a 5, which is right where he needs to be leading up to a big game.  That’s right; this segment’s high point was Georgie Whitfield telling us Manziel is emotionally neutral leading up to this game.  End rant.

We saw the return of Beatnik Poetry with Tom Rinaldi, and this week’s piece was dedicated to Bear Bryant.  Since Bryant coached at both A&M and Bama, and this week would have been his 100th birthday, this game was even more special.  Rinaldi brought up food for thought such as what Bryant would think of his teams today.  He said Bryant’s influence is both timeless and present in today’s game, and that this game would be a gift to him on his 100th birthday.  Very deep stuff.

Other things we learned today is that Texas A&M still hates Dennis Franchione, since they hissed and booed every time his name was brought up.  We also learned that *PERHAPS* the visiting locker room at A&M has been *ACCIDENTALLY* out of order this entire season, so Bama brought their own portable AC units just in case they were needed.  We also learned that Paul Finebaum thinks the SEC is pretty great, and he also wants you to get off his lawn.

A big part of today’s show was a roundtable discussion with Fowler, Corso, Herbie, Desmond, Pollack and Paul Finebaum about players getting paid and the scandals coming out in recent weeks about Oklahoma State and Bama.  Maybe it is just me, but I feel like every time one of these stories surfaces, Desmond Howard is suspiciously very vocal about supporting the players and proclaiming them innocent until proven guilty at the same time he advocates players getting compensated for their likenesses.  Of course, Mr. Howard would NEVER pick up a nickel off the street if it fell from a booster’s pocket at Michigan back in the day.  However this devolved into a discussion of civil rights with Desmond Howard apparently fighting for the lower class, and letting us know that this is just another example of the underprivileged being taken advantage of by the wealthy.  I half expected him to dive into a speech such as “I HAVE A DREAM… THAT ONE DAY… COLLEGE PLAYERS CAN BE PAID LARGE SUMS OF CASH… DELIVERED IN BRIEFCASES… BY COLLEGE RECRUITERS… AND SHADY AUTOGRAPH DEALERS… AND SEEDY BOOSTERS…” and so on.  This discussion got very heated between the guys, and Desmond Howard got somewhat hammered on Twitter by a lot of users who accused him of vaguely getting race involved in this discussion.  At the end of the segment, Desmond reminded us that he has no good solution to the problem, but wants you to know it is a problem.  Fair enough.

We got a quick mention of Rutgers retiring Eric Legrand’s number at today’s game.  If for some reason you don’t know Eric Legrand, just Google his name.  His story is inspirational, and it was really cool to see it happen today.

There was a segment from Gene Wojciechowski about the mother of Thad Randall from Nebraska who apparently plays center for the Houston Energy women’s football team.  Thad said he could take on his mom and wouldn’t cut her any slack.  She also apparently had three toes amputated from some accident and continues to play.  She seems tough.

Chris Fowler returned with the Hundred Dollar Bill Question, and this week was actually one the rest of the crew almost got right.  Who was the last QB to beat Saban in back to back starts?  Drew Brees at Purdue.  The guys were all pretty close guessing Big 10 QBs from back in the day, but missed Brees.  Also, Desmond said that this question should only be worth $50 since it was so late in the show.

I felt like today’s show lacked some of the pizzazz of other weeks.  We didn’t get any Tom Rinaldi-Tim Tebow Memorial segments featuring heartbreaking and emotional stories related to football programs.  Bald Man on Campus was pretty straight forward.  We didn’t get to see EVERYONE’S FAVORITE SEGMENT OF THE DAY DAVID POLLACK USING THE INTERNET.  And we only got about 25 seconds of Samantha Ponder today as she introduced a single segment.  I wonder what that is about.  Anyways, here was her outfit today.  Jennifer said the top was great, and liked that her hair was back to being parted on the side.  She didn’t like the skirt’s color or shape, so Mrs. Ponder please take note.

But now its time for the business you all came here for.  Today’s guest celebrity picker was musician Lyle Lovett.  Last year Lee Corso might have been the only one who gave Texas A&M a shot against Bama, and he picked them to win the game.  Corso is off to an 0-2 start picking headgear games this year, and so is Billy the Cat.  Billy the Cat went with Texas A&M (the clear bowl being A&M, the red bowl being Bama).  Corso threw on the Alabama headgear (which meant no live animals this week to Herbie’s relief), and that means after today’s game Lee Corso leads Billy the Cat 1-0 in headgear picks for the year.  Enjoy your evening and see you next week.

2012-13 Bowl Season: BCS BIG BOARD BONANZA!

The day has finally arrived folks.  Tonight is a very bittersweet night for college football fans and insane gamblers alike, as we crown this year’s champion and put the sport to bed for 8 months.  For this reason, we must make the most of it and savor every minute of today, which also means it is time for Cole’s BCS BIG BOARD BONANZA WITH PICKS AND OTHER THINGS!!!  I will be updating all day long burning up the DVR to make sure I get you the updates on who is picking which team in tonight’s big game.  I will be taking you right up to kickoff where we will *HOPEFULLY* get one more headgear pick from Coach Corso before college football hibernation.  So make sure you check back throughout the day because who knows how things will develop.

With a current tally of 36 votes, our panel of experts is currently sitting at 24-12 in favor of Bama over Notre Dame in tonight’s game.

Week 14 2012: Gameday review!

It is a bittersweet day here at Cole’s Gameday Blog.  This is the last Saturday of the regular season, which means the last edition of College Gameday for the year.  However, that also means bowl season is about to start, and we are sure to get at least one or two Gameday editions from big bowl games.  Also, we all know that bowl season is where legends are made in the rankings here at my blog.  Anyways, Gameday was broadcasting live from Atlanta, GA (AKA the Dirty Dirty) for the big SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia.  Our expert panel is currently sitting at 16 to 5 in favor of the Crimson Tide over the Bulldogs, so gamblers take note.

Chris Fowler opened the show up on a sunny morning in Atlanta, which is a big change from the last couple of weeks where they opened the show in darkness on the West coast. Fowler was driving the bus with Herbie, Desmond and Pollack along for the ride.  Samantha Steele quickly took over for Fowler, as he disappeared to go do whatever Chris Fowler does for 45 minutes before the main show on ESPN.  Samantha Steele was looking good this morning, and Jennifer noted that she redeemed herself with a great outfit this week after last week’s questionable decision on Ms. Steele’s part.

Samantha Steele: Week 14

The first hour of the show was pretty dry on content.  They spent a lot of time breaking down football games (who would have thunk it?).  Desmond and David talked Heisman for a while, coming to an agreement that this award is not a lock for Johnny Manziel.  They both think this award is still up in the air between Manziel, Colin Klein and Manti T’eo.  David got into some really deep analysis and informed us that Colin Klein will need to BALL OUT to win the Heisman tonight.  We got a piece with Todd McShay back in the studio, where he was LOOKING AT THE TAPE!!!  This week’s subject was Georgia QB Aaron Murray.  It was basically a 90 second kick in the crotch for Murray, with all of the tape pointing out his weaknesses.  Desmond and David both made some picks to end the first hour.  David had leaned strongly towards Georgia earlier this week, but both guys picked Bama to win the SEC championship tonight.

As the main show opened up on ESPN, Samantha Steele was sent to the bus, and David Pollack was dispatched to go use the internet.  This really has been my favorite 20 seconds of Gameday each week this year, as we get to see awkward David Pollack dressing up or doing something weird all while tweeting.  This week he put the apron back on, and was pretending to be smoking some meat in the tailgate area.  I say pretending, because he was mostly just poking at it repeatedly with a utensil while tweeting on his phone.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly joined the show to talk about generic coach things.  He was booed loudly by both crowds on location, and was good-natured about the whole thing.  Speaking of Notre Dame, let me use this opportunity to shoehorn in a screenshot of Mark May dressed up as a leprechaun from last week’s College Football Final.  Mark May had offered to dress up like this if Notre Dame went undefeated this year, and the payoff was glorious.

Gene W. had a decent piece on Jarvis Jones, about how his brother was murdered several years ago, and how his life spiraled out of control afterwards.  He was taken under the wing of a family friend who legally adopted him, and she got him back on the right track.  It is this positive influence, and the inspiration of his brother which he credits for his success on the field.  We saw the return of Bald Man on Campus with Scott Van Pelt.  This week he was in College Station to meet up with Johnny Manziel and talk about how his life has changed since coming into the Heisman talk.  I would like to take this opportunity to editorialize once again if you don’t mind indulging me.  While I don’t have a problem with the nickname Johnny Football, I am firmly opposed to the use of the nickname “Johnny Heisman” for this young man, whether or not he should win the Heisman trophy.  This nickname bothers me quite a bit, because the award is named after John Heisman.  This nickname is the antithesis of clever when it is merely the same name as the legendary figure that the award is named after.

Other random notes from today include Desmond Howard repeatedly forcing in references to Tupac Shakur’s lyrics, and Lee Corso’s confusion as to who Tupac Shakur was.  Tom Rinaldi was not quite as in-your-face this week as recent weeks, but he did get a few segments in.  He had a sit-down interview with Nick Saban.  Either Tom Rinaldi didn’t have a beatnik poetry piece this week, or I missed it somewhere.  The main piece, which was really good, was Rinaldi’s piece about Coastal Carolina’s head coach Joe Moglia.  Coach Moglia was a defensive coordinator at Dartmouth back in 1983, but quit that job to support his four children by working on Wall Street.  He went on to become CEO of TD Ameritrade, and made over $100 million before leaving the company in 2008.  After this, he decided to return to his passion; coaching football.  He took an unpaid assistant position under Bo Pelini at Nebraska before coaching in the UFL.  Now he finds himself the head coach at Coastal Carolina, and they have made the FCS playoff second round for the first time in school history.  He credits this success to his experiences running things on Wall Street.  I enjoyed the feedback from his players about his generosity towards the team.  They would say something about needing new cleats, and he would show up with new Adidas cleats for the team.  They would ask for Nikes, and he would show up having bought Nikes for the entire team.  They needed new jerseys, so he bought new jerseys for the team.  This was a really cool story.  Just beware, because the Sam Houston State Bearkats are also in the FCS playoff second round.  Should Coastal Carolina meet up with Sam Houston State, it will be in the championship game.  BE ON YOUR GUARD COACH MOGLIA!  THE BEARKATS ARE COMING FOR YOU!  DO YOU HEAR ME?

Like I said, the content was a little bit light this week on the show.  I don’t know if its because there is a light schedule of games today, or if it is because of the abundance of breakfast tacos which manifested themselves in front of me while watching.  I will not speculate on such things.  But I guess its time for the last official pick segment of the year on an official College Gameday edition.  This week’s guest picker was handsome man and Atlanta Falcon’s QB Matt Ryan.  Apparently Lee Corso did not know where the nickname Matty Ice came from, as he has never partaken in a nice tallboy of Natty Ice.  This went along well with Corso’s ignorance of Tupac Shakur from earlier.  Coach Corso made some great picks this morning, including picking “Calvin Klein” to beat Texas tonight, so take note gamblers.  Matty Ice went against the hometown crowd in Atlanta by picking Bama to win the big game tonight.  Herbie agreed and picked Bama as well.  Would Corso call for the upset?  Absolutely not, as he reminded us that Uga the bulldog is too ugly, so he has to go with Alabama and donned the elephant headgear.  Should be an exciting matchup, so enjoy this last regular edition of College Gameday.
