Week 8 2013: Results are in, picks are graded, and oh no what happened?

Week 8 was pretty mundane if you ask me. I’m sure that you, just like myself, made the following predictions for last week: Tennessee over S.Carolina, Vanderbilt over Georgia, Mizzou over Florida, Auburn over Texas A&M, UCF over Louisville, and Ole Miss over LSU. We all probably also picked FSU over Clemson, Notre Dame over USC, Stanford over UCLA, and Minnesota over Northwestern. Now I’m not here to point fingers, but below you may find a handful of people who did NOT make these obvious picks.

Needless to say, it was a rough week for our posse of expert analysts. First off, let’s get the good performances out of the way. Brad Edwards went 3-1, as did Lou Holtz and Trevor Matich. Pat Forde had a decent week at 22-8. Herbie went 7-4, and Lee Corso went 6-3 nailing the headgear pick with FSU over Clemson. Jennifer came in with a solid 8-4 record this week. The winner this week by default goes to Desmond Howard, who came in at 6-1 basically by the chance that he only picked 1 SEC game. Congratulations Desmond. Bill Murray went 5-4 but put on a delightful performance.

Now let’s move on to this week’s real news. A handful of others tanked hard. David Pollack went 2-3. Todd McShay went 3-3, but missed TWO upset specials. Mel Kiper Jr. went 2-3. You would think Dari Nowkhah and Jason Sehorn would be this week’s co-losers at 3-8. However this week we had a performance for the ages. I hope you remember this day and tell your grandchildren about the week that Robert Smith, last year’s bowl pick’em champion, put up an amazing 0-9 performance. I don’t recall ever seeing something like that in all of the years I’ve been doing this. It somehow seems harder than going 9-0. Whatever it was, it was impressive.

Week 7 2013: Results are in, picks are graded (and its not pretty)

This is the week that I have been waiting for. This is the week I like to emphasize when people tell me how easy it is to pick straight up winners in college football. This was the week of upsets. It seems like every year there is a week where David slays Goliath over and over, and this was ours (at least, so far). Of course, I’m sure in your pick ’em league you had Texas, Mizzou, Utah, and Penn State winning right? Right guys?

Anyways, for starters there is something I need to address. I am throwing a penalty flag on Mark Schlabach this week, and he got penalized deservedly. Schlabach, the noted Georgia alum and homer, shocked the world this week by picking Mizzou to beat Georgia in his upset special on espn.com. Then Saturday morning, shortly before the kickoff, he tweeted that he woke up feeling a Georgia win and changed his pick. Let us shame this man, and karma came back to get him when Mizzou took down Georgia.

As for how everyone else did this week, it was pretty rough. Only two of our expert analysts had solid winning weeks, with Robert Smith at 5-2, and Pat Forde at 21-6. However, this week’s winner by a long shot was my fiance Jennifer who went 9-2 picking games alongside the pros. Your certificate and ribbon are in the mail. Losers this week need to be highlighted for some absurd picks. Celebrity guest dueling pickers had a rough week. Hope Solo went 4-5, and Warren Moon went 5-4. Corso’s upset special Navy got slaughtered by Duke. Not a single expert picked Texas over OU. David Pollack picked both Washington and Northwestern to upset their opponents. Todd McShay and Brad Edwards both picked Arkansas to upset South Carolina as their upset specials, and could not have been more wrong. And finally, for those of you who hate Colin Cowherd, he also picked Arkansas as his upset special.

Lee Corso got his headgear pick right, going with Oregon over Washington. Billy the Cat also picked Oregon, so they continue to be tied. It is a good race between them. What a great weekend of football. Check below to see how your favorite (or most hated) personality did this week.
